18-month-old dies from flu complications in Lucas County

An 18-month-old boy passed away Monday from flu complications at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center.

The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department held a press conference Wednesday, and announced the first flu related death since 2014 in the Toledo area. The boy's passing was the first flu-related pediatric death in Lucas County since it was first able to be reported in 2005.

This comes after the first pediatric flu death in the state was announced by the Ohio Department of Health Tuesday morning, a four year old from Montgomery County.

Toledo-Lucas County Health Department Health Commissioner, Eric Zgodzinski, is encouraging discussion with your kids to prevent tragic events like this.

"Talk to your provider, your doctor. Make sure you talk with him or her about flu vaccinations. Get vaccinated. Also, talking about when your kids or you are sick."

During the first week of the year, more than 1,700 people in Ohio were admitted because of the flu.

So far this season, 5% of those who end up in the hospital are younger than 2.
