The 2017 Flag City Honor Flight took off at the Toledo Express Airport just after 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Friends and family stood by and held American flags as a sign of respect for service members. 169 veterans from multiple branches and wars attended the trip.

Jim Klausing, a member of the organization who helped put together the event, says it's important for veterans to receive visible support.

"One of the members, our photographer on the Honor Flight, this is his grandfather's flag that was on his coffin at his funeral so it's meaningful," Klausing said.

The flight is expected to return to the airport at approximately 9:30 p.m.
