Investigation underway in car/train fatality in Williams County

Police say driver went around down, functioning gates

Police report a Bryan, Ohio was man is killed in a car vs. train crash Tuesday afternoon.

Troopers from the Defiance post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are currently investigating the incident which occurred around 2:30pm on County Road 15D (N. Union Street) at the railroad tracks, 2/10 of a mile south of US Route 127 in Pulaski Township in Williams County.

Police say 74-year-old John A. Restainer was driving northbound on County Road 15D when the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan he was driving went around down, functioning lighted gates, crossing over four sets of railroad tracks before being struck in the left side by an eastbound Norfolk and Southern freight train on a fifth set of railroad tracks.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Williams County Coroner.

The crash remains under investigation

OSHP asks drivers to call # 677 to report impaired drivers or drug activity.
