Memorial Day Weekend boat safety tips from experienced boaters

Terry Kelsey washed his boat earlier in the day on Wednesday (WNWO).

With Memorial Day Weekend approaching, many boaters will hit the water. There's several things to do to keep safe before you leave the docks.

Both Terry Kelsey and Ron Soka have spent a lot of time on the water over the last few decades.

With it being so early in the boating season, there are some dangers that can and should be avoided.

"One, the water is cold, so you don't want to end up swimming. Second of all, there's a lot of logs in the water that can take out props and things like that," said Soka.

Before you head out, there are some precautions to take, as well.

"Just make sure you've got everything you need, like enough life jackets. This weekend, we'll be going out and I'll probably have 20 people on board. So we want to make sure that we have at least 20 life jackets," said Kelsey.

With the Coast Guard stationed right beside the Toledo Yacht Club, it's important to plan with them. There's an app you can download, the USCG Float Plan App, and with a touch of a button, your GPS location will be sent to the Toledo Coast Guard.

"It's always nice to have the coast guard looking over your shoulder. We have a good relationship here, with the coast guard being right across the water from TYC," exclaimed Soka.

Once all of the safety precautions are in place, the most important thing is to enjoy yourself.
