Navarre Pool to open Saturday
TOLEDO, Ohio (WNWO) -- Area kids are beating the heat at Toledo's city pools.
But one of them still is not open.
"It's been taking too long, its already almost time for school to start again," said Destiny Allen-Dewese.
The Navarre Pool's opening day has been pushed back as they finish reconstruction on the pool.
"Like any construction process you kind of run into some challenges," said Rick Akeman, Manager of Parks, Recreation and Forestry. "Whether it's a pool or a building, or any type of restoration or reconstruction project, you run into challenges."
Akeman said the 50-by-100 square foot pool is 80 years old an needed an upgrade that included a new liner, new filtration system and new decking around the pool.
And area kids are patiently waiting.
"I come up here and watch them fix it, I come up here and wait," said Montrice Madrid who lives nearby.
But those working on the project said it will be worth the wait.
"Essentially they’ve got a brand new pool here and everything I’d say is state of the art," said Mark Nowakowski, project manager with HPH Mechanical.
The project is nearly complete, and Akeman said it should be open Saturday pending official inspection.
"They basically have to just come back and do a final walk-through because everything else that’s being done here was already discussed in a previous inspection within the last 10 days," said Nowakowski.
A day one of the area children is very excited about.
"I like swimming because I want to be a lifeguard when I get older," said Madrid.
