St. Anthony Church gets new life with another extension

Diocese says it will not place financial burden on Catholics

The Diocese of Toledo on Tuesday says Bishop Daniel Thomas and other officials agree on a possible new direction for the former historic West Toledo church.

At the meeting Bishop Thomas offered an opportunity for Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, Toledo mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, and Lucas County Land Bank president David Mann to further clarify the most recent proposal of the land bank to acquire the former church.

The major obstacles were discussed and presented by the proposal and how they could be overcome.

Bishop Thomas again expressed his hope the land bank would accept the outright gift of the building and the entire parcel of land.

Responding to their proposal, Bishop Thomas agreed to allow additional time for their inspection of the buildings.

The land bank accepted the offer of additional time for inspection and a final decision on receiving the gift of the property would be communicated to the diocese by the land bank on or before Tuesday, June 26.

This agreement came with the assurance the land bank determines the building is not structurally sound or it decides it is not possible to accept the property.

At this time all necessary permits for demolition would be issued without delay.

Bishop Thomas emphasizes the diocese will not place further financial burdens on the Catholic faithful by committing additional funds for the maintenance and preservation of the structure.

Those individuals present understood and accepted this proposal.

Tuesday's meeting was an continuance from a gathering on Friday, June 8.
