TOLEDO, Ohio — One year after a video involving a Dick's Sporting Goods shoplifting dispute went viral, the company and altercating employee are now being sued.
Charles E. Boyk Law Offices has filed a lawsuit against Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. and loss prevention officer Carl Stahl on behalf of the late 36-year-old Aaron Buckenmeyer's estate.
The complaint claims Stahl grabbed Buckenmeyer without provocation by the neck and slammed him into the ground, putting him in a chokehold and beating him despite Buckenmeyer saying he couldn't breathe and bystanders saying he had asthma. It also alleges that no employees or managers intervened and that the store is not only liable for the assault, but negligent for employing Stahl.
The complaint asks that Stahl and the company be held accountable and pay compensatory and punitive damages for these actions.
