TPD hosts K9 virtual ride along

The public joined K9 Zola and Officer Michael Garcia for a virtual ride along on Tuesday (WNWO).

The Toledo Police K9 Unit was responsible for more than 800 arrests last year, and they had their talents showcased on a virtual ride along Tuesday.

TPD officers are trying to engage with the community, especially connecting with those on social media.

Cameras followed Officer Michael Garcia and K-9 Zola for eight hours.

In at least one traffic stop, she found marijuana.

She also helped out at a robbery scene earlier in the day and assisted SWAT with arresting a felon.

"It's a lot of fun, but it's challenging. Just when you think you know it all, or you know your dog or how to read your dog, they kind of show you otherwise, and it's back to square one. You kind of train from there. Every day is a learning day, and it's a lot of fun," said Garcia.

TPD's K9 Unit features ten dogs.

Seven specialize in narcotics, while the other three can detect explosives.
