United Way starts 'Kickoff to Caring' by handing out backpacks
United Way of Greater Toledo filled more than 5,600 backpacks on Wednesday at the Huntington Center as the first event in their 2017 Kickoff to Caring campaign.
Donations from community sponsors helped fill the bags. Each bag had $15 worth of school items including paper, binders, rulers and glue. Hundreds of volunteers spent the day getting them ready for students.
"I'm at a loss for words when I see the support and the camaraderie and the teamwork of these people coming together to get this done for us today," said United Way of Greater Toledo President and CEO Kathy Doty. "It's a great tribute to the community and spirit of the community."
The backpacks were dropped off at 24 Toledo schools and homeless shelters. Kids who qualify for a free bag will get them on the first day of school.
