Whitmer honors Laila Rivers with special night

Laila Rivers was honored prior to their match against Fremont Ross (WNWO).

Laila Rivers may not be able to play this season for Whitmer's volleyball team, but it was still her night Thursday.

The freshman is battling leukemia.

Rivers was honored before their match against Fremont Ross and presented the match's game ball.

Supporters were also wearing "Laila the Champ" t-shirts.

Her father Lamont says the support from the Washington Local School community has been incredible, and that they all wish she could be out there playing.

"We call it the new normal. You've got to face the challenges that are in front of you, but she's an inspiring, strong young lady. I'm so proud of her."

There will be a spaghetti dinner to support Rivers coming up on October 6th. For more info, text or call 419-360-2870.
