WASHINGTON (TND) — The migration crisis at the southern border to continues to deteriorate as levels of illegal migration are on track to break all-time records.
This week the small community of Eagle Pass, Texas-- with a population of around 28,000 -- had 5,000 illegal migrants cross into their town, spurring the Democratic Mayor Rolando Salinas to declare a state of emergency.
"You have all these thousands of people just walking in without any consequence whatsoever," said Salinas.
The mayor blames the federal government, saying Eagle Pass feels abandoned by Washington.
Anyone from the administration, please, come visit Eagle Pass," said Salinas during an interview on Thursday. "At the very least someone, somebody up there at the White House needs to put out a statement giving us a plan.
The White House continues to take fire from reporters on the issue.
"We are dealing with a broken system," said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Friday. "And no action was taken from Congress, and so what the president was able to do, he imposed consequences."
She went on to highlight that Biden administration has removed more than 250,000 individuals from the U.S. who "do not have the legal basis to remain" since May 12.
The White House's actions did not appear to be enough for Texas Governor Greg Abbott, whodeclaredWednesday there was an “invasion at our border" due to the administration's policies.
As such, the White House and Texas are playing tug of war of policies.
For example, federal Border Patrol agents were captured on video -- apparently acting on orders from Washington --cutting razor wire, allowing migrants in so they could be processed. In response, state agents went back and installed even more wire shortly after.
The impact of the flux is being felt even in non-border states like New York, whose leaders say the surge has maxed out their resources.
"We’re at our limit. If you’re going to leave your country, go somewhere else," Hochul said during an interview on Wednesday. This contrasted with what she said about migrants in 2021: "We’ll welcome you with open arms. We won’t only house you but we’ll protect you.”
To help process the new arrivals, President Joe Biden is deploying an additional 800 troops to the southern border.
